Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt and I wrote each other handwritten letters when we were apart - it was romantic [celebrity-news-tonight.tumblr.com]

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt know how to keep the romance alive when they’re separated.

When Ange was directing war drama Unbroken in Australia while Brad worked in London on World War II flick Fury, the couple kept in touch by penning old-fashioned letters to each other.

‘He was supportive from a distance and it was quite romantic in a way,’ says Ange, 39.

‘We decided to be of that time when we could imagine he was in the European Theatre and I was in the Pacific Theatre and we wrote handwritten letters to each other that were very connecting for us, thinking of the people that were separated for months if not years at a time back then.’

Ange, who underwent a double preventative mastectomy last year after discovering she had a 87% chance of getting breast cancer, learned to really appreciate her life when she was making Unbroken.

The movie is a biopic of war hero Louis Zamperini and the actress was reminded to be grateful when she showed him the flick before he died of pneumonia on 2 July.

‘I brought him the film on my laptop in the hospital and it was amazing seeing someone at the end of their life watching their life unfold again, at the same time their body was shutting down,’ Ange tells Australia’s TV Week.

‘He wanted me to make the movie to show something hopeful about the strength of the human spirit that can pull us through.

‘He reminded me to have my surgery in the year that I did and he reminded me to appreciate every day of my life.’
